Mediterranean diet on Mounjaro: a practical UK guide
The Mediterranean pattern, vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, beans, fish, olive oil, with less red and processed meat, has some of the strongest long-term health evidence of any way of eating. It pairs naturally with Mounjaro because it prioritises nutrient quality, which is exactly what matters when portions shrink.
Why it works well with treatment
Quality inside small portions
With appetite reduced, every meal has to earn its place nutritionally. This pattern is built around nutrient-dense foods: vegetables, pulses, fish, nuts and wholegrains.
Gentle on a slower stomach
It leans away from the heavy, fried and very fatty meals that most commonly trigger nausea and reflux while gastric emptying is slowed.
Fibre without extremes
Beans, vegetables and wholegrains support your bowel as food volume drops, helping with the constipation that is very common on treatment.
Sustainable and social
No food group is banned, it works for family meals and eating out, and there is no cliff edge to fall off when treatment goals are reached.
Making it work in the UK
- Base meals on vegetables plus a protein: fish, chicken, eggs, beans or lentils
- Tinned fish, frozen vegetables and tinned beans are cheap, quick and fully count
- Swap butter for olive oil in cooking, and white bread and rice for wholegrain versions gradually
- Aim for fish twice a week, one of them oily such as salmon, mackerel or sardines
- Keep red meat occasional and processed meat rare
- Fruit or yoghurt as the default sweet finish
A day on the plate
| Meal | Example |
|---|---|
| Breakfast | Greek yoghurt with berries and a spoon of oats or seeds |
| Lunch | Lentil or bean soup with wholegrain bread, or a tuna and white-bean salad |
| Dinner | Baked salmon or chicken with roasted vegetables and a small portion of wholegrain rice |
| Snacks | Fruit, a small handful of nuts, or vegetable sticks with houmous |
Portions will likely be smaller than these sound; eat slowly and stop when comfortably full. More ideas in the meal ideas hub.
Who should get advice first?

Common questions
Is the Mediterranean diet good with Mounjaro?
It pairs naturally with treatment: it prioritises nutrient-dense foods within smaller portions, leans away from the heavy fatty meals that trigger nausea, and provides fibre that helps with constipation. No single diet is required with Mounjaro, but this pattern has strong long-term health evidence.
Do I need to buy expensive ingredients?
No. Tinned fish, tinned beans, lentils, frozen vegetables, eggs and oats are all core Mediterranean-pattern foods and are among the cheapest items in a UK supermarket.
Can I drink wine on it?
The traditional glass of wine is optional, not required, and alcohol commonly worsens nausea and reflux on Mounjaro. If you drink, keep within UK guidelines and expect treatment to lower your tolerance for it.
