How Monj Pricing Works: Our UK Methodology

Last verified: March 2026Written by: Nick Johnson

Monj is an independent advocate for pharmacy price transparency. Importantly, we are not a pharmacy, we do not provide medical advice, and we do not influence clinical decisions. Instead, we focus on helping you compare regulated UK providers clearly and confidently.

Crucially, we do not take commission from sales linked to pricing visibility. As a result, the prices you see are designed to reflect genuine market rates rather than promotional bias.

Therefore, our goal is simple: to help you understand exactly what you will pay and avoid unnecessary costs when accessing regulated care.

1. How Pricing Works on Monj

We show two types of prices so you can compare options clearly and avoid unexpected costs.

Discount Prices (*) What You Pay

Prices marked with an asterisk (*) show the final price at checkout with a new customer offer applied.

This means:

  • The discount code has already been applied
  • Delivery is included where applicable
  • Any standard extras are included in the total

Therefore, the price you see is the actual amount you pay, with no hidden fees.
Where a pharmacy charges separately for items such as needles or consumables, we factor this into the displayed price wherever possible.

Retail Prices: Standard Listed Price

Retail prices reflect the pharmacy’s standard advertised price.

These prices typically:

  • Include delivery
  • Include necessary consumables (such as needles)
  • Do not include additional discount codes

As a result, retail prices provide a baseline comparison across providers.

Discount, “Up To” : What This Means

Some pharmacies display prices as “up to” a certain amount.

In practice:

  • The same discount code may apply differently across products or strengths
  • Final prices can vary depending on dose, pack size, or treatment stage

For this reason, we calculate and display the effective price per product, so you can make a like-for-like comparison.

How We Keep Prices Accurate

We regularly review and update pricing data to reflect current offers and pharmacy listings. However, prices can change at short notice.

Therefore, we recommend:

  • Checking the final price at checkout
  • Reviewing any product-specific conditions before ordering

2. The Data-First Approach to Pricing

We don’t just list prices; we audit them. Our methodology is designed to uncover the ‘True Cost’ of treatment:

  • Direct Verification: We contact pharmacies directly to confirm that their “on-screen” price includes clinical review and VAT.
  • The “Hidden Fee” Audit: Many providers add delivery costs or needle charges at the final checkout stage. We factor these in so the price you see on Monj is the price you actually pay.
  • Real-Time Monitoring: Pharmacy prices change weekly. Our data engine tracks these shifts to ensure our ‘Best Price’ rankings are always current.

3. Navigating Subscriptions & Discounts

To keep the comparison fair (and to stop you from overpaying), we break down pricing into two categories:

  • One-Off Purchases: Best for those wanting flexibility. We display the total cost including any public discount codes.
  • Subscription Models (Labeled “SUB”): Often not the cheapest long-term option, but they involve repeat billing. We clearly mark these so you aren’t surprised by a recurring charge.
  • Excluded Referral Links: We generally no longer include “refer-a-friend” links. These are often disabled by pharmacies, and can lead to account bans. We only show prices available to *every* consumer.

4. Your Safety: Our Verification Standards

Consumer protection means ensuring “cheap” doesn’t mean “counterfeit.” Every pharmacy on our list must pass a 4-point check:

  1. GPhC Check: Verified registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  2. Clinical Oversight: Confirmation of CQC or GMC-registered prescribing clinicians.
  3. Physical Audit: Periodic “Postal Checks” to ensure medications are shipped in temperature-controlled, discreet, and legal packaging.
  4. MHRA Compliance: Ensuring the provider is authorized to sell medicines online in the UK.
