Travelling With Mounjaro from the UK: Flights, Fridges and Borders

Before you go

• Keep the boxes, keep the stickers. The dispensing label on the box is effectively your prescription evidence. Officials compare it with your passport, so travel with pens in labelled original packaging and never peel the sticker off.
• Carry backup evidence. A photo or copy of your prescription or pharmacy order confirmation costs nothing. For stricter destinations, ask your prescriber or pharmacy for a short letter naming the medicine, dose and your details.

The airport and the flight

UK rules allow medicines and medical equipment, including injection pens and needles, in hand luggage when needed for your journey, and essential medical liquids can exceed the 100 ml limit; airports advise carrying supporting documentation such as the prescription label or a letter, and airlines and airports can ask for it. Mention the medical supplies to security as your bag goes through and the process is usually seconds.

• Hand luggage, never the hold. Cabin temperature suits the pen; the hold risks freezing it, and checked bags also go missing.
• Cooling kit if you want it. For most flights the 30 day rule means no cooling is needed at all. For long trips through hot places, evaporative cooling wallets such as Frio, insulated pouches with gel packs, or battery powered medicine coolers all work; just never let a frozen pack touch the pen directly.
• Frozen gel packs for medicine are permitted through UK security, and on long haul flights cabin crew will sometimes refrigerate medicine if you ask.

Storage on the road: the 30 day rule

The storage rules for the UK Mounjaro KwikPen, from the manufacturer’s product information:

• Unused pens live in a fridge at 2 to 8 degrees and last to their printed expiry there. Never freeze one; a pen that has frozen goes in the bin even after thawing.
• Out of the fridge, a pen can be kept at up to 30 degrees for up to 30 days, whether or not it has been started. Since a pen holds four weekly doses, that window covers its whole working life.
• The 30 day clock starts the first time the pen leaves the fridge and does not reset. Putting a pen back in a fridge mid trip is fine and does not harm it, but it does not buy the clock back; note the date it first came out.
• Never store the pen with a needle attached, keep it capped and out of direct sun, and check before injecting that the liquid is clear and colourless.

Destinations: easy, strict and check-first

The EU and most tourist destinations are straightforward. Border checks on personal medicine are rare in the Schengen area, hotel fridges are everywhere, and pharmacists in resort areas answer storage questions daily. Original packaging plus the dispensing label is all the preparation most trips need.

Strict destinations include the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Indonesia and Turkey, where personal medicine imports are regulated and some medicines require advance permits or registration.
